The school project was initiated at Holy Family School (Chakala, Mumbai) in the academic year 2007-08, for ~40 of its Std V Marathi medium students.

In 2008-09,

  • LeapForWord got access to its first BMC school, namely, Chakala Municipal School.
  • Additionally the course was also initiated at Shirpur (District, Dhulia) – our first rural school project.
  • The Effort reached ~145 students through its school project in this year. The classes were conducted only on saturdays after school hours.

In 2009-10,

  • The Effort made significant inroads in the BMC schools adding 16 new batches across 6 BMC schools.
  • Also beginning this year, LeapForWord got official permission to conduct classes during regular school hours in the municipal schools unlike the previous two years when the classes were conducted only on saturdays after school hours.
  • The Effort reached ~600 students across 9 schools/educational institutions in this Academic Year.

In 2010-11, the following new project/ locations have been added;

  • Nearly 480 students across 5 new BMC schools in the Andheri - Jogeshwari area (K - East ward) of Mumbai
  • A school in Shirpur (Dist Dhule, Maharashtra), bringing another 80 children from a primarily tribal background into the programme
  • A school in Nareshwadi (Dahanu, Maharashtra), where nearly 90 students are undergoing the programme
  • A school in Kaman village (Dist Thane, Maharashtra), with more than 50 students receiving the training.

The Effort has also partnered with other Non Profits to take the programme to more number of students at a faster pace. Through our Non Profit partners we are currently reaching around 800 students across 18 schools in Mumbai. To read more about the  Non Profit partner program, click here.

In all these new additions a new delivery model is being implemented where in;

BMC/ NPO Partner

  • Teachers conduct the LeapForWord program with their students based on a pre-scheduled time table, and

LeapForWord

  • Supports by way of training the teachers in content delivery,
  • Provides books to students, and
  • Assesses the achievement of learning objectives and overall monitoring of the execution of the project.

The course is offered free of cost to all our students.
